Britten, (Edward) Benjamin
Britten, (Edward) Benjamin (1913–76) English composer. He is best known for his operas, which rank him among the foremost composers of the 20th century. He also wrote numerous songs, many especially for Peter
Pears. Britten's operas include
Peter Grimes (1945),
Billy Budd (1951),
The Turn of the Screw (1954), and
Death in Venice (1973). Other works include the popular
Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945) and
War Requiem (1962). In 1948, he established the music festival held annually at his home town of Aldeburgh, on the
e coast of England. He was made a peer in 1976.
