Beecham, Sir Thomas
Beecham, Sir Thomas (1869–1961) English conductor, one of the greatest of his era. He founded (1906) the New Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic (1932), and the Royal Philharmonic (1947). In 1933 Beecham became artistic director of Covent Garden Opera, introducing the operas of Richard Strauss to English audiences. He was widely respected as an interpreter of Delius and Sibelius.
