silicon(Si) An element which is required by certain plants in small quantities. It does not seem to play a role in metabolism but some plants accumulate a large amount (as
silica) in the walls of epidermal and vascular tissues, and thereby reduce water loss and retard fungal infection. Silica forms an important part of the cell walls of diatoms and is present in many timbers.
