epeiric sea

epeiric sea(epicontinental sea) A shallow sea which extends far into the interior of a continent (e.g. Hudson Bay and the Baltic Sea). The term also denotes shallow sea areas that cover the continental shelf and are partially enclosed (e.g. the North Sea).
