tuff The compacted (lithified) equivalent of a volcanic
ash deposit, which has been generated and emplaced by
pyroclastic processes or was water lain, and in which the grain size of the pyroclasts is less than 2 mm. Where the proportion of
lapillisized pyroclasts exceeds 10% the term ‘lapilli-tuff’ is used.
