tsunami
tsunami A seismic sea wave of long period, produced by a submarine
earthquake, underwater volcanic explosion, or massive
gravity slide of sea-bed
sediment. In the open ocean such waves are barely noticeable even though they may be travelling at 700 km/h, but on reaching shallow water they build up to heights of more than 30 m and cause severe damage in coastal areas.
