sticky bomb

sticky bomb, British hand grenade (no. 74), developed by MD1, which stuck to armoured targets such as tanks to maximize the explosion. It was a glass (or plastic) sphere with a handle attached for throwing. The sphere broke on contact allowing an adhesive ‘sock’ of plastic explosive inside it to spread like a poultice on to the armour. As the Boys rifle (see small arms) proved useless, it was the only effective weapon the British infantryman had against armour until the PIAT was introduced.
