‘huff-duff’

‘huff-duff’ was the Allied nickname for HF/DF (High Frequency/Direction Finding) equipment which measured the direction of radio transmissions so that bearings from two or more could fix the transmitter's position. It played a vital part in combating U-boats in the battle of the Atlantic, and during the Pacific war it detected the approaching Japanese fleet before the Philippine Sea battle.
