element C were steel gate-like structures first used as anti-tank barriers in Belgium in 1940. They were subsequently used by the Germans on the Atlantic Wall to prevent landing craft from running ashore. The ‘C’ comes from the name of their inventor, a Belgian engineer called Cointet.
