blimps

blimps were 45-knot airships used by the US Navy for anti-submarine patrols off the US eastern seaboard, and later in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and off Brazil. Organized as Fleet Airship Wings, they were equipped with radar and armed with depth charges (see anti-submarine weapons) and machine guns, but they were more effective in raising morale in the convoys they protected than in sinking U-boats.
