area bombing

area bombing was the technique whereby whole cities and not just specified targets were bombed. Its aim was not only destruction but the shattering of civilian morale. RAF Bomber Command exploited its full potential against Germany (see strategic air offensives, 1) after photographic reconnaissance had revealed in 1941 the failure of its attempts at precision bombing (see Butt report). It was also used by Twentieth US Army Air Force against Japan (seestrategic air offensives, 3), and the most extreme examples of it were the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombs.
