Zouaves

Zouaves, élite infantry units of the Armée d'Afrique (see France, 6(b)) which originally drew their manpower from the Zwawa who lived in the Djurdjura mountain range in northern Algeria. However, by September 1939 the fifteen Zouave regiments were composed of metropolitan Frenchmen, European settlers in North Africa, and Spanish republicans (at least 100,000 of whom had sought refuge in Algeria after the Spanish Civil War), although there were also a few Algerian Muslims. Ten regiments took part in the fighting which preceded the fall of France in June 1940, three took part in the North African campaign, and two in the French Riviera landings.
