Z˙egota

Z˙egota, secret name of the Polish Council for Aid to Jews (Rada Pomocy Zydom) formed in December 1942. It helped Jews, and in particular children, find suitable hiding-places to escape the Final Solution, and it also gave financial assistance and false documents to those living underground. Its work was concentrated in Warsaw, but it also functioned elsewhere in occupied Poland. In all, it possibly saved over 100,000 people.
