Wasilewska, Wanda

Wasilewska, Wanda (1905–64),Polish Communist politician who fled to the USSR when Germany invaded in September 1939 (see Polish campaign). She was subsequently elected to the Supreme Council of the USSR, became one of Stalin's trusted advisers and was ‘the most servile exponent of Soviet ideology’ (  J. Garlinski, Poland in the Second World War, London, 1985, p. 156). She suggested forming Berling's Army to Stalin and became chairman of the executive council of the Union of Polish Patriots when it was formed in March 1943 (see Poland, 2(e)).
