Wainwright, Lt-General Jonathan M. (1883–1953),US commander of the Philippine Division when the Japanese landed on Luzon in December 1941 (see Philippines campaigns). He then commanded 1st Philippine Corps on Bataan before MacArthur, ordered to Australia in March 1942, made him commander of all ground forces on Luzon. However, this proved an unsatisfactory command system and Wainwright was soon promoted lt-general and given command of all forces in the Philippines. He surrendered on 6 May 1942 after making a last-ditch stand on Corregidor which secured his reputation as a first-class fighting general. He chose not to escape capture and after spending the rest of the war as a prisoner-of-war in Manchukuo, went home to a hero's welcome, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (see decorations).
