Volksgrenadier

Volksgrenadier (people's grenadier), German divisions formed within Himmler's Replacement Army (see Germany, 6(b)) from September 1944 onwards and mostly used to defend the West Wall. They were raised to replace divisions lost in the German–Soviet war and in the Normandy campaign, and recruits came from rear echelon units, or from remnants of other units destroyed in battle. There were about 50, each almost half the strength of a normal division. They had few supporting arms and little mobility, but were well armed with automatic weapons (see small arms) and Panzerfaust (see rocket weapons).
