Umberto II

Umberto II (1904–83),son of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy who, as crown prince, commanded the Italian Army of the Alps which attacked France in June 1940. He changed sides when his father signed the armistice with the Allies in September 1943 and when Victor Emmanuel was obliged to step down in June 1944, Umberto, as lt-general of the realm, acted as regent. In May 1946 his father abdicated in his favour but Umberto, who became known as the May King, was narrowly ousted by a referendum in favour of abolishing the monarchy after he had reigned for only 35 days. See also Italy, 3(b).
