Udet, General Ernst

Udet, General Ernst (1896–1941),German First World War fighter ace when he served in Göring's Richthofen Squadron. In 1936 Göring put him in charge of the Luftwaffe's technical office where he became largely aircraft such as the Stuka dive-bomber and the twin-engined Ju88. In 1939 he became the director of air armament, but his inability, among other failures, to improve aircraft production, lowered his prestige in the eyes of Hitler and Göring. His depressions, exacerbated by alcohol and narcotics, increased to such an extent that he eventually committed suicide. The facts responsible for the construction of fighters and medium bombers at the expense of heavy bombers, and for the design and manufacture of several famous German were covered up and he was given a state funeral.
