UTAH, code name for assault beach in American sector on which the 4th US Division landed at the start of the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 (see
OVERLORD). It lay along the eastern coast of the Cherbourg peninsula northwards from the mouth of the River Vire in the Baie de la Seine and the division landed south of Les Dunes de Varreville. By the end of the day 23,250 troops had disembarked there.
