Twining, Lt-General Nathan F. (1897–1982),US airman who served as a corporal in the US National Guard during the First World War. By 1943 he had risen to command Thirteenth USAAF based in New Caledonia and in July that year he took tactical command of all Allied and US air units for operations in the Solomons (Airsols), the first joint air command in US history. From January 1944, as commander of Fifteenth USAAF in Italy, and of the Allied Strategic Air Forces fighting in the battle for the Mediterranean, he planned the raids on the Ploesti oilfields and directed his command's role in the strategic air offensive in Europe. In August 1945 he succeeded LeMay as commander of Twentieth USAAF on the Marianas, which had been created to bomb Japan with the new B29 Superfortress (see strategic air offensive, 3), and it was Twining's aircraft that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
