Truscott, Lt-General Lucian K. (1895–1965),US Army officer who commanded 3rd US Division during the
Sicilian campaign, at
Salerno, and at
Anzio where, from 23 February 1944, he took command of Allied forces (6th US Corps) and broke out of the precarious bridgehead.
In May 1942, Truscott, as a colonel, was seconded to
Combined Operations headquarters in London. Promoted brigadier-general the same month, he formed the first Ranger battalion (see
USA, 5(f)), a part of which participated in the
Dieppe raid at which he was present. His command of a small task force which captured Port Lyautey during the
North African campaign landings in November 1942 established him as a battle-proven commander and during the subsequent fighting in Tunisia he commanded
Eisenhower's Advanced Command Post. In September 1944, after 6th Corps had taken part in the
French Riviera landings, he was promoted lt-general; and in November he was given command of Fifth US Army fighting in the
Italian campaign which he led successfully until the end of the war.
