Tragino raid

Tragino raid. This, the first British attempt at airborne warfare, was undertaken by 35 men of No. 2 Commando (later 11th Special Air Service Battalion, then 1st Parachute Battalion) on 10 February 1941. They destroyed their target, an aqueduct across the River Tragino 58 km. (36 mi.) south of Foggia, which supplied the toe of Italy with fresh water. All were subsequently captured, and one, Italian-born but of British nationality, was executed. The aqueduct was quickly repaired and the operation failed to cause, as had been hoped, any disruption at the ports of Taranto, Brindisi, and Bari which supplied Italian forces fighting in the Western Desert campaigns.
