Toyoda Soemu, Admiral

Toyoda Soemu, Admiral (1885–1957),C-in-C of the Japanese Combined Fleet from March 1944 in succession to Vice-Admiral Koga. He ordered Operation A-GŌ which resulted in a resounding defeat for his fleet by the US Navy in the Philippine Sea battle of June 1944. In May 1945 he was appointed Chief of the Naval General Staff and was on the side of those who wanted to continue the war. He was tried by an Allied military tribunal, but acquitted.
