Tokyo Express, Allied nickname for regular convoys of Japanese destroyer-transports which carried reinforcements and supplies for Japanese troops fighting during the
Pacific war on
Guadalcanal and, later, on other islands in the Solomons. They were dispatched from
Rabaul, down the channel between the islands which the Allies called ‘The Slot’, and were first given this name by
Coast Watchers who reported their movements. The mainstay of the Tokyo Express was Rear-
Admiral Tanaka's Transport Group. See also
convoys.
