Task Force 57 was the designation of the combined British Pacific Fleet (Task Force 112) and its
Fleet Train (Task Force 113), which operated in the
Pacific war from March to August 1945 as part of
Admiral Spruance's US Fifth Fleet. The use of it had been offered by Churchill, and accepted by Roosevelt against
Admiral King's advice at the
OCTAGON conference in Quebec the previous September. Under the overall command of
Admiral Fraser, who was appointed in November 1944, it was commanded tactically by Vice-Admiral Bernard Rawlings and comprised two battleships, four carriers, five cruisers, and fourteen destroyers, making it by far the largest and most powerful British fleet of the war. It helped cover the invasion of
Okinawa—where 4 ships were damaged and 98 aircraft lost—and mounted attacks on Formosa and mainland Japan.
