Tarakan, an island 24 km. (15 mi.) long, situated off the eastern coast of Dutch Borneo in the
Netherlands East Indies, which had valuable oilfields producing about 500,000 tons of oil annually. It was occupied by the Japanese in February 1942. On 1 May 1945 the 13,000-strong Australian 26th Brigade Group, commanded by Brigadier D. Whitehead, with 5,000 men of the Royal Australian Air Force under command, were landed there by a US Amphibious Group with the objective of establishing an air base to support later operations in Borneo. The island was defended by about 2,000 Japanese soldiers and sailors who resisted strongly. Fighting continued until the end of July 1945 and cost the Australians 894 dead or wounded. It was then found that the airfield was beyond immediate repair.
