TRIDENT, codename for the second Allied Washington conference held from 11 to 25 May 1943 at which Churchill and Roosevelt, and their diplomatic and military advisers, were present. Their discussions centred upon future strategy, which included a decision to delay the invasion of France until May 1944. It was also agreed that Portugal should be approached to allow air bases on the Azores; and that the policy of
unconditional surrender, first enunciated at the Casablanca conference the previous January (see
SYMBOL), should be pursued with Italy, despite requests by
Eisenhower and Maitland
Wilson for a more lenient approach. The deficit in available shipping and the satisfactory progress of the
battle of the Atlantic were also discussed. See also
diplomacy.
