Sugiyama Hajime, Field Marshal

Sugiyama Hajime, Field Marshal (1880–1945),Japanese war minister during 1937–8 and a strong supporter of war with the western powers and for the policy of striking southwards into South-East Asia. He supervised Japanese operations at the start of the China incident before succeeding Terauchi as C-in-C of the North China Area Army in December 1939. He was appointed army chief of staff in 1940, was promoted to the honorary rank of field marshal in 1943, and remained chief of staff until 1944 when he again became war minister after the fall of Tōjō's government that July. In April 1945 he took command of the First General Army designated to defend Japan against the expected US invasion. He committed suicide after Japan's surrender.
