Streicher, Julius (1885–1946),founder of the anti-Semitic German Socialist Party which amalgamated with the Nazi Party in 1921. In 1923 he founded the newspaper Der Stürmer, whose obscene outpourings encouraged and exacerbated German hatred for the Jews. He was an early supporter of Hitler and in 1935 he staged that year's Nuremberg rally at which Hitler announced his anti-Semitic laws. In 1940 he was dismissed as Franconia's Gauleiter for dishonesty, though he continued editing his paper. Crude, sadistic, and corrupt, Streicher called himself ‘Jew-baiter number one’. He was universally loathed and but for Hitler's protection would probably not have survived so long. At the Nuremberg trials he was sentenced to death and executed. See also anti-Semitism.
