Stopford, Lt-General Montagu

Stopford, Lt-General Montagu (1892–1971),British Army officer who, from the end of 1943, commanded 33rd Indian Corps, part of Slim's Fourteenth Army fighting the Burma campaign. He played a critical role in stemming the Japanese Imphal offensive of March 1944 by raising the siege of Kohima. In March 1945 he captured Mandalay and after Rangoon fell that May he took command of the newly formed Twelfth Army. He commanded South-East Asia Command from June 1946 until it was disbanded later that year.
