Stern gang. Also called Lehi, an acronym derived from Lohamei Herut Yisrael (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel). It was a splinter group of the Irgun formed in Palestine in 1940 whose leader, Abraham Stern, opposed Irgun's truce with the British. He sought a modus vivendi with the Nazis, which lost him much support, and he lacked the resources for a terror campaign that went beyond assassinating policemen. He was killed by British security forces in February 1942, but the gang survived under its new leader, Yitzhak Shamir. In November 1944 it killed Lord Moyne, the British minister in the Middle East.
