Smolensk Attentat (Attentat, attempted assassination). In March 1943 Lt Fabian von Schlabrendorff, one of those associated with Maj-General Henning von Tresckow's plot to kill Hitler (see Schwarze Kapelle), planted a bomb in Hitler's aircraft before it took off from Smolensk to where the Führer had flown to meet Field Marshal Kluge. But the bomb—constructed from two captured British Clam mines (see limpet mines) provided by Maj-General Oster and disguised as a bottle of Cointreau—failed to explode and was later retrieved by other conspirators.
