Simpson, Lt-General William H.

Simpson, Lt-General William H. (1888–1980),US Army officer who was a classmate of Patton and Eichelberger at West Point Military Academy, where he graduated second from bottom. However, he rose to become commander of Ninth US Army which was activated in north-west Europe in September 1944. He was one of the US Army's most outstanding generals, known for his ability to work with the British, and he served under Montgomery during the Ardennes campaign as well as under Bradley in the battle for Germany.
