Shetland Bus

Shetland Bus, nickname of a British clandestine organization formed by SOE, the Admiralty's Naval Intelligence Division, and the Military Intelligence Service of Norway's government-in-exile. It used Norwegian fishing boats (later three US submarine-chasers) and their crews to maintain contact with Norwegian resistance movements. It ferried agents and equipment between Shetland, Scotland's most northerly islands, and Norway, and often evacuated Norwegian civilians. Several boats were used to transport human torpedoes across the North Sea in an attempt to attack the German battleship Tirpitz in October 1942. The organization operated from 1941 to 1945, the sea passages always taking place in winter when daylight was short.
