Shell House raid

Shell House raid, mounted in March 1945 by 18 British Mosquito bombers and 25 American Mustang fighters against Copenhagen's Gestapo HQ which was situated in the city's Shell Petroleum offices. The raid was requested by resistance workers in Denmark who wanted to free 38 leaders of the resistance who were being held on the top floor and to destroy Gestapo records. Using the technique of skip-bombing the bombers demolished the building's ground floor which contained the records and destroyed vital evidence that would have led to the arrest and execution of other resistance leaders. One of the bombers crashed, killing 86 children in a nearby school, but 32 of the 38 prisoners escaped. As one of them left the building, he picked up, at random, a card index which turned out to contain a list of all the Gestapo's Danish helpers.
