Seabees

Seabees was a name derived from the initials CB (construction battalions). Formed by the US Navy in December 1941, the force eventually grew to 8,000 officers and 250,000 men and its work of constructing naval bases, air strips, and roads, and handling cargos, during the Pacific war and elsewhere, was an essential foundation to the victories that followed. Its volunteer members were all trained craftsmen or civilian engineers whose pay was the equivalent of at least a petty officer's. The organization's insignia was a flying bee wearing a sailor's cap, and carrying a tommy gun, a wrench, and a hammer. See also engineers.
