Schulte, Eduard

Schulte, Eduard (1891–1966),anti-Nazi chief executive of Giesche, which was one of Germany's leading mining firms. As such he had detailed knowledge of his country's position regarding raw and synthetic materials. On his frequent visits to Switzerland he passed on high-level intelligence to several Allied agents, including Allen Dulles, and to the Swiss authorities. In July 1942 he was the first person to inform the Allies that Hitler had ordered, as a matter of policy, the extermination of European Jewry (see Final Solution). In December 1943, on the advice of Hans Gisevius (1904–74), who worked for the Abwehr in Switzerland, he took refuge in Switzerland for the remainder of the war to avoid arrest. He wanted his name kept secret, which it was until 1983.
