Saw, U

Saw, U (1900–48),Burma's Myochit (Patriotic Party) leader who was prime minister of Burma from 1940 to 1942. In December 1941 he went to London to negotiate Burma's post-war independence, but failed. While on his way home, MAGIC intelligence revealed a traitorous conversation he had had with a Japanese diplomat in Lisbon, and he was arrested and interned on the Seychelles. He returned to politics after the war and was executed for the assassination of Aung San. U is a respectful term of address.
