SWORD, codename for assault beach in British sector on which 3rd British Infantry Division disembarked at the start of the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 (see
OVERLORD). It lay between St Aubin sur Mer and the mouth of the River Orne in the Baie de la Seine. By the end of the day 28,845 troops had been landed there.
