Royal Oak, sinking of. On the night of 13/14 October 1939, U-47, commanded by Günther Prien, penetrated the defences of the base of the British Home Fleet at Scapa Flow in Scotland. One of his first salvo of torpedoes found its target, but those aboard the battleship
Royal Oak attributed the explosion to an internal cause, Prien's second salvo, fired 20 minutes later, capsized the vessel with the loss of 833 lives. An Admiralty board of enquiry concluded that Prien could not have entered by the channel he had in fact used, and the British remained uncertain how the ship had been sunk until it was announced on German radio. Prien himself was killed the following year when his U-boat was sunk.
