Rowecki, Maj-General Stefan

Rowecki, Maj-General Stefan (1895–1944),Polish Army colonel who used the pseudonym ‘Grot’ when, from July 1940, he commanded the Polish partisan force, Union for Armed Struggle (Związek Walki Zbrojnej, or ZWZ) which became the Polish Home Army in February 1942 (see Poland, 4). Promoted maj-general after his capture in July 1943, he was murdered in Sachsenhausen and was replaced by Lt-General Komorowski.
