Rol-Tanguy, Colonel Henri

Rol-Tanguy, Colonel Henri (b.1905),French communist resister who fought in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and took part in the fighting which preceded the fall of France in 1940. When demobilized, he organized ‘popular committees’ of saboteurs in Paris motorcar factories working for the Germans. Taking the codename ‘Rol’, he rose to command the Franc-Tireurs et Partisans in the Paris region (see also France, 9) was military commander of the Paris rising in August 1944, and signed the instrument of German surrender.
