Rio conference

Rio conference, pan-American meeting of foreign ministers held at Rio de Janeiro in January 1942. It followed on the conferences at Panama and Havana, and the objective of the USA was to obtain a joint pledge from all Latin American states that those who had not declared war on the Axis powers would do so. Chile and Argentina objected and the US resolution was replaced by one that simply recommended the severance of relations with the Axis. The conference also established an Inter-American Defense Board, which gave Latin America an involvement in western hemisphere defence, and an Emergency Advisory Committee for Political Defense. This monitored pro-Axis activities, and its investigations brought about Chile's severance of relations with the Axis powers in 1943. See also diplomacy.
