Retinger, Józef

Retinger, Józef (1888–1960),Cracow-born writer who, as a young man, worked tirelessly to regain Polish independence and who, as a consequence, came to know and be highly respected by many European and US politicians and statesmen. During the Second World War he came to be known as the éminence grise of General Sikorski, the head of the Polish government-in-exile, which resulted in his being involved in wartime diplomacy at the highest level. In 1944, at the age of 56, he parachuted into Poland to contact the leaders of the Polish Home Army (see Poland, 4) and after the war became one of the foremost proponents of the European community (see consequences of the war).
