Rawalpindi, sinking of. On 12 November 1939 the C-in-C of the German Navy, Grand
Admiral Raeder, decided to threaten British
convoys by simulating a breakout into the Atlantic by two of his
German surface raiders,
Scharnhorst and
Gneisenau. By doing this he also hoped to take the pressure off his pocket battleship
Admiral Graf Spee, by diverting British warships which were hunting her (see
River Plate). While making this feint the two warships, on 23 November 1939, came upon
Rawalpindi, a 16,697-ton British
armed merchant cruiser which was patrolling the gap between the Faeroes and Iceland. Although
Rawalpindi scored one hit, it took
Scharnhorst only fourteen minutes to sink her.
