Raiding Forces

Raiding Forces, from October 1943, the name of British co-ordinating HQ which formed the Raiding Support Regiment and had under its command, among other units, the Long Range Desert Group, Special Boat Squadron (see Special Boat Section), and the Greek Sacred Regiment. These all took part in the Dodecanese Islands campaign that autumn and the last two, and the Levant Schooner Flotilla (Greek caiques manned by British service personnel), became part of the newly formed Anglo-Hellenic Schooner Flotilla when Raiding Forces were reorganized in April 1944.

Raiding Forces was also the name by which the two elements of No. 1 Special Air Service were briefly known when the regiment was reconstituted after the capture of its commanding officer, David Stirling (1912–90), in February 1943.
