Raczyński, Count Edward

Raczyński, Count Edward (1891–1993),Polish ambassador in London from 1934 to 1945 who also served as minister of foreign affairs in Sikorski's government-in-exile. He signed the Anglo-Polish Treaty in August 1939 which formalized the British guarantee of Poland (see Poland, Guarantee of) given the previous April, and which brought the UK and France into the war on 3 September 1939. After the war he stayed in the UK and from 1978 to 1984 served as president of the Polish government-in-exile.
