Pomeranian Wall

Pomeranian Wall, a line of fortifications which was built in 1932–7 along the German (western) side of the so-called Polish corridor. It consisted of a series of interlinked tank-traps and artillery emplacements, and stretched for some 120 km (75 mi.) on either side of the town of Schneidemühl (see Map 41). In January 1945 it failed to halt the main Soviet offensive towards Berlin, having been bypassed to the south by forces moving through central Poland. But its defenders posed a serious threat to the Soviet Army's communications, and fought with dogged determination for many weeks. They included two Dutch divisions of the Waffen-SS who were still holding out at the start of the battle which led to the fall of Berlin. They were finally overpowered by units of the First Polish Army fighting under Soviet command.
