Polish Resettlement Corps

Polish Resettlement Corps. In the summer of 1945 some 250,000 Polish troops remained in the West serving under British operational command. Large numbers did not wish to return to a homeland under communist rule. They were encouraged to join the Polish Resettlement Corps (PRC), a non-combatant unit of the British Army formed in September 1946 with the purpose of facilitating the transfer of Polish troops to civilian life in the UK. Service in the PRC was for a maximum of two years during which members could learn English and a trade, before seeking employment. Some 114,000 Poles joined the PRC, of whom 20,000 either emigrated or returned to Poland.
