Peace Pledge Union

Peace Pledge Union, British pacifist organization founded by Canon Dick Sheppard which encouraged people to claim exemption from military service and urged peace with Germany. Its membership exceeded 130,000 in September 1939 and its newspaper had a circulation of 40,000; in the early months of the war membership probably increased further. A careful watch was kept on the few fascists connected with it, but MI5 recognized that the vast majority of its members were genuine pacifists and, unlike those of the British Union, no action was taken against any of its leaders.
